It's a new year, so let's try something new! Let's see if I can jazz up my jewelry photos that I normally take on a plain white background like these cute Love to Read earrings.
I found these cool tiles at Home Depot that I thought would make interesting backgrounds for some of my plain silver jewelry. The tiles have a weathered look like old wood with tones of gray and black. They are long, thin pieces, not the squares I'd prefer, but since my jewelry tends to be on the smaller side (I don't make a lot of huge statement necklaces), I thought I could make them work. |
Here's my first photo:

How do you feel when you look at this photo? Nauseated? Like you need to poke your head out a window for a gulp of fresh air?
Great! That's exactly the kind of feeling I wanted people to have when they looked at my jewelry!
Not!
How did I take such a blurry photo? Oh, well, sometimes that happens. No problem. I'll just take the photo again.
Same thing!
Arghhh . . .What was going on? Too much coffee this morning? Were my hands shaking? Maybe I should pull out the tripod.
I took another photo and asked a friend to look at it. My eyes aren't perfect; maybe the photo was fine and my eyes were not.
Nope. It was definitely the photo.
It took a few more photos before I wised up and looked at the tile itself.

Very closely.

It wasn't me.
The lines weren't added to the boards precisely.
The good news is it's a trip back to the home improvement store, not the eye doctor, to fix. The even better news is that I didn't buy a bunch of these tiles and install them in my house where I'd have to look at them every day. Can you imagine living in a house with a dizzy, just-stepped-off-the-merry-go-round feel?
