Woodsy Owl This piece started as an homage to Frank Hess's designs for the Miriam Haskell company during the 1940's. My mom gave me a copy of Miriam Haskell Jewelry by Cathy Gordon & Sheila Pamfiloff for Christmas, and I went a bit overboard with layered floral motifs. I started playing around with the wooden discs and silver flowers primarily because they felt so counter to each other: earthy and simple vs. shiny and a bit too pretty. About that time the Ojime owl that had been hanging around the corners of my bead tray rolled into the mix. It all flew together really quickly after that. Whoo knew? |
California Bungalow I grew up in Pasadena, California, in an area of town called "Bungalow Heaven" for all of the craftsman era cottages that are there. I've always loved all of the earthy colors, quirky little built-ins, and decorative touches. A few years ago I discovered a shop called Pasadena Salvage and thought I'd wander through and look for something small and "stringable." I guess I was hoping for lamp-pulls or dresser-knobs, which all proved to be too heavy, however I did find this brass escutcheon (lock plate), which became the pendant for this piece. The color palette that I used is reminiscent of the colors people paint these homes in this area and together it reminds me of my childhood and the neighborhood where I was raised. |
