Have you looked at any of your old projects recently?
This is a domino pin I made in a class with Tim Holtz around 2006. I wasn't editor of Beading Daily yet and even though I signed up for his class, I had no idea who this mixed media guru was. (I signed up because I thought the project was cool.) Tim was a fun teacher, as you might expect. We created three pins in that class, using the alcohol inks to color the dominoes and dangling the charms from them. This was among my first forays into mixed media jewelry and I was absolutely smitten.
It's always fun to see an old piece of jewelry you've made. Here's what I was thinking when I saw this one:
- Yeah, that looks like me.
Of all the rubber stamps I could have chosen, I chose ones with words on them. I still use a lot of words in my work today. - Huh?
That disembodied hand charm is a little creepy! I have a hard time picturing me using that same charm today. - I would do that differently now.
It's easy to forget how much better you get over time, learning new techniques and improving the old ones. I look at the hole at the bottom of the domino now and wonder about setting it with a tube rivet. - That gives me an idea.
We used a sheet of mica to cover the ink. I haven't used mica since, but now I'm thinking about it again. What else could I use that material for?
Go take a look at some of your old work. I bet you'll be surprised by what you find!
